About downtown Maryville

Downtown is where Maryville began. The town grew around John Craig's fort in the 1780s and was incorporated in 1795, and Broadway (US-411 and US-129) is still its main street. Court Street, High Street and Washington Street frame the blocks around the courthouse, and Pistol Creek wraps around the edge of downtown before feeding Greenbelt Lake to the north.

Several downtown buildings date to the late 1800s and early 1900s, including the Samuel A. Patton Building on East Broadway, and the Greenbelt Park along the creek came out of the city's 1970s "Now Town" redevelopment. That history shows up underground: many buildings have been renovated several times, with newer plumbing tied into much older drain lines.

Drain problems common in downtown Maryville

Restaurant and café grease

Downtown's restaurants, cafés and bars send more grease, starch and food waste down their lines in a day than a house does in a month. Grease cools and coats the pipe, then catches everything that follows. Kitchens that only call when the floor sink backs up usually need scheduled hydro jetting rather than another emergency cable run.

Old cast iron in renovated buildings

A storefront can look brand new inside while its drain stack is original cast iron. Cast iron scales and narrows from the inside as it ages, so a building that was fine for decades can start clogging after a change of use, such as an office becoming a coffee shop. A camera inspection shows whether the line needs cleaning or a section replaced.

Shared lines in mixed-use buildings

When several tenants share one drain line, one tenant's grease or wipes can back up into another's space. Building owners and managers should know where the cleanouts are and who is responsible for which section, before the first backup.

Older homes on the downtown edge

The residential streets around downtown have some of Maryville's oldest sewer laterals, many installed before exterior cleanouts were standard. Without a cleanout, a provider may need to pull a toilet to reach the main line, which takes longer and costs more. Adding one is usually worth it.

In busy kitchens, grease builds up in the trap and branch line long before the main line clogs.

Drain cleaning services for downtown Maryville

City sewer work downtown

The City of Maryville maintains the public sewer mains downtown and has carried out sewer rehabilitation work along High Street and at the Washington Street intersection in recent years. If a backup affects several neighbors at once, or water rises from a street manhole, call the city as well. Problems on your side of the line, from the building to the public main, are usually the property owner's to fix.

Downtown Maryville drain cleaning questions

Do you help downtown restaurants with grease line cleaning?

Yes. We connect restaurants and cafés with providers who offer hydro jetting and scheduled maintenance cleaning. Ask for dated service records; they are useful if a health inspector asks.

Who fixes a sewer backup in a downtown storefront I rent?

Usually the building owner or property manager. Report it to them right away, stop using water, and photograph the damage. If several units are affected, the shared line is likely the cause.

Is the line between my building and the street my responsibility?

Generally the property owner is responsible for the service line up to the public main, and the City of Maryville maintains the main itself. The city can confirm where that line falls at your address.
